José María Moreno

Born in Palma de Mallorca, José María Moreno studied conducting in Spain and at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, under M. Kukushkin. He was trained at the Conservatories of Valencia, the Liceo de Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, gaining degrees in Orchestra Conducting, Singing, Sol-Fa, Piano, Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition. He has a degree in Law from the Universidad de las Islas Baleares.

Following the teachings of Pedro Valencia, Moreno has pioneered the introduction of Hun Yuan Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung techniques applied to orchestra conducting.

Some of the prestigious soloists he has worked with are: Plácido Domingo, Josep Bros, Roberto Alagna, Joan Pons, Carlos Álvarez, Marzio Giossi, Joel Montero, Miguel Ángel Zapater, Paolo Lardizzone, Fiorenza Cedolins, Stefania Bonfadelli, Hiroko Morita, Jana Kurucová, Khatuna Mikaberidze, Kerstin Descher, Kremena Dilcheva, Kinga Dobay, Karen Frankenstein, Rita Kapfhammer, Stefanie Schaefer, Cristina Faus, Sandra Moon, María Luisa Corbacho, Sylvia Corbacho, Eugenia Bethencourt, Diletta Rizzo Marin, and Alejandro Bustamante.

He is a frequent guest conductor of the Berliner Symphoniker, the Brandenburger Symphoniker, the Augsburger Philharmoniker (Germany); the Karelian Philharmonic Orchestra (Russia); the Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta (Italy); the Orquestra do Norte (Portugal); and the Madrid Regional Orchestra, the Oviedo Filarmonía and the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, among other ensembles.

José María Moreno has enjoyed huge success in performances at Peking’s Forbidden City Music Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Helsinki Music Center and the Teatro de la Zarzuela, in Madrid. He has performed for the King and Queen of Spain, on several occasions, and before Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

He is the chief conductor of the Capella Mallorquina, and was professor of improvisation, conducting technique, choir-leading and analysis at the Advanced Music Conservatory of the Balearic Islands.

Moreno is the Artistic and Musical Director of the Palma de Mallorca Teatre Principal (since 2012) and Principal Guest Conductor at the Majorca Music Festival.

His future projects include engagements with new ensembles such as the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Valencia Orchestra, among others.
