Hansjörg Schellenberger

Born in Munich in 1948, his devotion for music began through the piccolo and baroque music. After obtaining his first prizes at juvenile competitions and at the United States Interlochen Music Camp Competition as best Orchestra Conductor, he furthered his professional music training in Munich and Detmold.

He studied oboe, orchestral conduction and mathematics, dedicating his free time to composition. He won the ARD Competition in Munich in 1972, starting his professional career with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, being appointed First Oboe in 1980.

In his oboist feature, Hansjörg Schellenberger has worked with the greatest conductors: Herbert von Karajan, Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, etc. As chamber musician he focused on the Ensemble Wien Berlin (being already first oboe at the Berliner Philharmoniker and at the Wiener Philharmoniker) and on the Haydn Ensemble Berlin, having founded the latter to play music from Haydn’s first period alongside other musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker.

After his experience at the prestigious Berlin orchestra, where he attentively studied the prestigious conductors that were invited to conduct, he decided to try the orchestral conduction. In this way, in 1994 he started his conduction career, collaborating with important orchestras such as the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, or the Orquesta Verdi in Milan, amongst others, as well as some renowned Spanish orchestras.

He has closely worked with some of the most important contemporary composers, and has therefore developed a strong devotion for contemporary music.

More than fifty recordings for labels such as Deutsche Grammohpon, Denon or Sony Classical describe his intense artistic activity. In 1997 he launched his own label with Margit_Anna Süss, Campanella Musica, alongside other colleagues from the Berliner Philharmoniker.
