Santiago Serrate

Born in 1975, he studied music in Barcelona and Madrid. He furthered his training in double bass at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Ludwig Streicher, where in 1998 he was awarded a diploma for being the most dedicated student of the year, presented by Her Majesty the Queen. He studied conducting with Antoni Ros Marbà and assisted to master classes with Arturo Tamayo, Salvador Mas, Geroge Hurst, and Otto-Werner Mueller.

He debuted as conductor at the age of 16 at the Escolanía Coral de San Agustín, being member of it and playing as accompaniment pianist. In 1994 he won the Double Bass First Prize at the Germans Claret Competition. He has been a member of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Joven Orquesta Nacional de Calatuña, the RIAS-Jugendorchester in Berlin, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE.

In 2001 he was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Joven Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid. He has conducted, amongst other international ensembles, the Orquesta Sinfónica Carlos Chávez in México F.D., Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo, or the Orchestra Utopica de Lisboa, as well as the main Spanish orchestras and the Modus Novus Ensemble, being Artistic Director of the latter.

He has conducted at the Jóvenes Músicos de la OSRTVE series, the International Contemporary Music Festival in Alicante, the Tributes to Igor Markevitch and Monographic Concerts to Cristóbal Halffter. He successfully debuted as opera conductor at the Gran Teatro del Liceo with l’Ape Musicale and at the Maestranza with Speziale by Haydn.

He regularly works as assistant of maestros such as Pedro Halffter, Antoni Ros Marbà and Michel Plasson. Amongst others, he has conducted at the Teatro Real de Madrid, International Music and Theatre Festival Pérez Galdós in the Canary Islands, the Galicia Auditorium, and at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. His operatic repertoire covers pieces by Bretón, Falla, Massenet, Ravel, Gounod, Mozart, Puccini, Berg, Wagner, Beethoven, Schreker, Zemlinsky, Busoni, and Schoenberg, as well as operas like Don Quijote y Lázaro by Cristóbal Halffter, of whom he was assistant conductor at the premieres held in Valencia and Athens.

Some recent and forthcoming projects are performances at the Teatro de la Zarzuela with La Calesera conducting the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, and other performances with the Orchestra Sinfonica di San Remo, Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE, Real Filharmonia de Galicia, and collaborations with the JONDE (Joven Orquesta Nacional de España) and Córdoba’s Orchestra and Choir at the Teatro de la Maestranza.
