Olaf Bär

Born in Dresden, Olaf Bär studied in the  Musikhochschule of his native city, and was later on a main member of the Semper Opera. His international career launched when he won the first edition of the Walther Grüner Lieder Competition. Since then, he is considered to be one of the best interpreters of his generation.

His intense operatic and concertistic activity has led his performances through the most important halls and houses of the world: Covent Garden in London, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Wiener Staatsoper, and other cities such as Amsterdam, Washington, New York, Madrid, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo, etc. He has been invited to prestigious festivals such as l Bayreuth Festival, Schubertiade, Trienal de Ruhr, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Salzburg, Glyndebourne or the Wiener Festwochen, amongst others.

He has also performed with the most renowned conductors, including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Georg Solti, Sir Neville Marriner, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Riccardo Muti, Sir Roger Norrington, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn or Simon Rattle, and more.

His operatic repertoire covers main roles in Die Zauberflöte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Capriccio de Richard Strauss, Die Fledermaus, Ariadne auf Naxos, Der Rosenkavalier, Die tote Stadt by Korngold, Alfonso und Estrella by Schubert, the Wagner operas performed in Bayreuth, Das Rheingold and Götterdammerung, and many more. What is more, Olaf Bär takes special care of his oratorio and concerto repertoire, including Works like J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Brahms Requiem, Fauré, Duruflé, Britten, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen by Mahler, or Haydn’s Creation, amongst others.

As well as recording for record companies such as Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, Decca or Harmonia Mundi, Olaf Bär has held a special relationship with EMI, recording most of the essential lieder repertoire available. He even obtained the Gramophon Prize for one of these recordings. One of his most successful records for this company was Tristan und Isolde by Wagner, with Antonio Pappano as conductor and Plácido Domingo on the main role.
